Chicago may have the title of “The Windy City”, but certainly Oklahoma (and many of the plains states) can contend for the title of “The Windy State”. A seemingly endless stream of wind constantly blows through the region. Although we all may be used to it by now (or at least ignore it), the wind can have some serious consequences for grape growers — from damaged vines to toppled trellis’ to poor fruit set. The vines look like they froze after getting sand blasted. Last Fridays’ wind took our 20′ x 24′ metal building on a ride thru the vineyard. Trellis to blunt of damage from metal pieces, but held. I guess we were lucky on direction, since it ended up in this years planting and second leaf vines-time to recover.
